No more comparisons.
I often fight the urge to look back at my past physical feats and performances (especially since I have been logging daily workouts and adventures for well over 10 years). That's done.
I am writing this because it’s important to me to continuing logging the journey, despite long gaps of time. My last post was full of late summer adventures and I can truly say I was feeling better, but far from perfect. I hit a wall not long after that and spiraled into this strange place between having a strong body and a weak back. My Achilles heel so to speak. After showing up at my PCP appointment in January, bitching yet again about back pain that won’t resolve, she sent me for an x-ray.
The result… minor arthritic changes and evidence of minor scoliosis. The professionals I saw after this x-ray shrugged and questioned whether or not I was standing crooked. At any rate, I have a familial history of scoliosis and I am working hard to not hike down that path.
I am currently working my ass off (literally) to correct an anterior pelvic tilt. Super weak glutes and obnoxiously tight hip flexors ended all running for me about eight weeks ago. This past week was the first time I was able to get on my bike, do my PT, daily mobility, and walking without reaching for the NSAIDS, ice and heat. My goal is a big summer hiking trip and for now, I am fine with running being on the back burner. All I care about is correcting this condition and being able to be outside!
I have also come to peace with the fact I won’t get my 100 mile body back. While I still have wild dreams of doing a 200 before I die, I know whatever comes next will not look like what came before. Today’s focus is much more on having fun, treating my body well and not judging where I am. Let’s be real… I am closer to 50 than 40, so it’s time to celebrate what I am able to do versus what I cannot!
Keep up the fight my friend!
Excellent read Heather ! I admire you for drive to "staying in the game". So many people would give up and be depressed. For you, that's not an option !! Keep up the fight !!
